Personal Development
Our school's personal development offer is broad, inclusive and carefully planned, providing pupils with a rich range of experiences that extend beyond the academic curriculum. Through a carefully sequenced programme of visits, visitors, enrichment activities, leadership opportunities and curriculum experiences, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to thrive in modern Britain.
Access and Inclusion
We are committed to ensuring that all pupils benefit from a rich and varied personal development offer. To support this, dedicated curriculum time is provided each week for enrichment activities, enabling every child to participate regardless of their individual circumstances. This approach removes barriers to participation and ensures equitable access to a wide range of extra-curricular experiences, including sport, creative arts, outdoor learning, leadership opportunities and special interest clubs. As a result, all pupils are able to develop their interests, talents, confidence and social skills through meaningful enrichment opportunities.
Civic Engagement
Pupils develop an understanding of their role within the community and wider society through a range of visits, visitors and curriculum experiences. These include visits to places of worship such as St Matthew's Church, mosques and a Hindu temple, alongside learning opportunities delivered by visitors representing a range of faiths and beliefs. Pupils learn about diversity, democracy, rights and responsibilities through the PSHE curriculum and participate in charitable initiatives such as Comic Relief and Children in Need. Strong community links and parent engagement events further promote active citizenship and belonging.
Arts and Culture
Pupils benefit from a wide range of cultural and creative experiences. These include museum visits, theatre performances, film events, music workshops and local singing festivals. Opportunities to participate in choir, music and art clubs, dance workshops, school productions and concerts allow pupils to develop confidence, creativity and appreciation of the arts. Annual events such as World Book Day further enrich pupils' cultural capital.
Nature, Outdoors and Adventure
Leyburn Primary School provides numerous opportunities for pupils to engage with the natural environment and benefit from outdoor learning. These include local area studies, rivers fieldwork, cave exploration and visits linked to environmental education. Residential visits promote independence, resilience and teamwork, while outdoor learning activities encourage pupils to develop confidence, curiosity and a sense of adventure.
A particular strength of the school's provision is the implementation of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme. Through high-quality, child-led outdoor play, pupils have daily opportunities to develop resilience, creativity, problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills. OPAL promotes inclusion by ensuring all pupils can access meaningful play experiences and encourages pupils to take appropriate risks, negotiate with others and develop independence. The programme is closely aligned with the DfE Enrichment Benchmarks, particularly those relating to accessibility, pupil engagement, personal development, community involvement and outcomes-focused provision. OPAL has transformed playtimes into a rich enrichment experience, helping pupils to develop confidence, leadership, social skills and emotional wellbeing while fostering a lifelong appreciation of outdoor activity and the natural environment.
Sport and Physical Activity
A strong sporting offer supports pupils in developing healthy lifestyles and positive attitudes towards physical activity. Pupils participate in a wide range of competitive and recreational activities including swimming, football, dodgeball, tennis, cross-country, orienteering, cycling and skipping events. Whole-school events such as Sports Day and Superteams encourage participation and teamwork, while leadership roles and extra-curricular clubs help pupils to develop confidence, resilience and sportsmanship.
Wider Life and Future Skills
The curriculum helps pupils develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed for future success. Visitors from a variety of professions, including emergency services, healthcare and construction, broaden pupils' understanding of careers and the wider world. Opportunities such as first aid training, Crucial Crew, financial education, careers learning, transition programmes and science enrichment activities equip pupils with essential life skills. A strong focus on online safety, mental wellbeing and leadership further ensures that pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for adult life.
Assessing Impact
The impact of our personal development and enrichment offer is evaluated through an annual Year 6 pupil survey, which measures pupils' views on the personal development opportunities they have experienced throughout their time at the school. The survey gathers pupil voice on key areas including inclusion and belonging, skills development, readiness for secondary school and the question, "What kind of person do you think you have become during your time here?" Findings provide strong evidence of the positive impact of the school's provision. In the most recent survey, 70.4% of pupils reported becoming more confident in trying new things, while 63% stated that their oracy and communication skills had improved. Furthermore, when asked which skill they felt would be most useful as they moved on to secondary school, 80.8% identified confidence as their most significant area of development. These outcomes demonstrate the effectiveness of the school's carefully planned enrichment and personal development offer in developing confident, articulate and resilient learners who are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
Summary
The school's personal development programme provides a coherent and progressive offer that enables pupils to become responsible citizens, appreciate arts and culture, engage with the natural world, lead healthy and active lifestyles, and develop the skills required for future education, employment and life in modern Britain. The breadth and quality of opportunities ensure that all pupils are exceptionally well prepared for life beyond primary school.
